  • BDDC’s pivotal role in Indonesia’s digital transformation.
  • Innovations driving sustainability and low latency in data centres.

BDDC, a prominent provider of data centre services in Indonesia, is at the forefront of the country’s digital transformation. At the IDNOG conference, we had the opportunity to speak with Erland Karim, Head of Ecosystem Business at BDDC, and his colleague Candida Afdianora about their company’s vision, achievements, and future plans. With a focus on reliable, secure, and scalable digital infrastructure solutions, BDDC is dedicated to supporting businesses and organisations in achieving seamless digital connectivity.

The power of connectivity

As Indonesia’s digital landscape evolves, the need for robust and secure data centres becomes paramount. BDDC has positioned itself as a key player in this sector, offering scalable and reliable solutions. Erland Karim noted, “Since the last COVID hits, there has been significant growth in the digital industry, with hyperscale companies like Google, Amazon, Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei making their presence felt in Indonesia.” BDDC’s state-of-the-art facilities cater to these giants, providing low-latency connectivity and creating an ecosystem that supports over 1,000 ISPs in the country.

Ensuring reliability and security

BDDC’s commitment to excellence is evident in its focus on reliability and security. “Our highest SLA in the market right now is 99.999%,” Karim mentioned, highlighting the company’s dedication to maintaining 24-hour operations and stringent security measures. The data centres in West and South Jakarta, with a combined capacity of 60 megawatts, underscore BDDC’s capability to support Indonesia’s burgeoning digital market.

Sustainability at the core

BDDC is also leading the charge in sustainability. The company received an award from Uptime for innovation in data centre design at the end of 2023. Their new facility in South Jakarta boasts green certifications and advanced water management systems. “We are trying to make it green as much as possible because we need to manage our ecosystem and reduce BOE,” Karim shared. This focus on sustainability aligns with global trends and sets a benchmark for the industry in Indonesia.

Future prospects

Looking ahead, BDDC plans to expand its services and infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the industry. “We have two data centres accommodating up to 60 megawatts, and we believe that collaboration with ISPs is key,” said Karim. The company’s goal is to enhance connectivity and low latency, crucial for applications like social media, where users expect seamless experiences.

BDDC’s role in Indonesia’s digital transformation is not just about technology but also about building a resilient ecosystem. The company’s strategic location in Jakarta ensures that it can provide low-latency services, crucial for businesses and end-users alike. Karim highlighted the importance of low latency in social media applications like TikTok and Instagram, where even a slight lag can impact user experience.

BDDC’s flexibility and adaptability to market needs are evident in its approach to customer service. “We are open and very flexible, helping customers achieve their needs and facilitating their transition from existing data centres,” Karim explained. This customer-centric approach is vital in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
