Groq expands to Europe with new Helsinki AI inference centre

    • Groq partners with Equinix to open its first European AI inference centre in Helsinki, offering lower latency and better data governance for European customers.
    • The Helsinki site complements Groq’s global network across the US, Canada, and Saudi Arabia, increasing its token‑per‑second processing capacity.

What happened: European deployment in Helsinki

Groq, the Mountain View‑based AI inference specialist, has opened its first European data centre in Helsinki in partnership with Equinix, the global colocation and interconnection provider. The facility is situated within an Equinix campus, where Groq leases space to host its custom LPUs (Language Processing Units).

This move aims to reduce inference latency for European customers and ensure data remains within EU governance frameworks. Groq’s CEO Jonathan Ross emphasized that the centre offers “the lowest latency possible and infrastructure ready today,” enabling developers to unlock AI capabilities immediately .

The expansion builds on GroqCloud’s existing footprint in Dallas, Canada, and Saudi Arabia—locations collectively processing over 20 million tokens per second. By entering the Nordic region, Groq leverages Finland’s sustainable energy, free cooling, and stable power infrastructure as highlighted by Equinix’s Nordics MD Regina Donato Dahlström .

    Why it‘s important

Groq’s Helsinki deployment signifies Europe’s rise in the AI inference infrastructure race. For European enterprises, this means improved performance, reduced cross‑border data flow, and alignment with data sovereignty laws. Providers like Groq and Equinix are responding to increasing demand driven by AI integration into industries such as automotive, finance, and healthcare.

Regulatory frameworks such as GDPR penalize international data transfer, so having inference compute inside the EU eases compliance. From a market standpoint, Groq now competes more directly with Nvidia’s inference offerings by emphasizing low latency and cost-effective scaling.
Socially, deploying energy-efficient infrastructure in Finland sets a precedent: regions with green energy policies and stable power grids are becoming AI infrastructure hubs. This supports Europe’s drive for sustainable tech growth and paves way for modular expansions and possibly renewable‑powered inference clusters in future.
