Google Cloud outage disrupts over 50 services

    • Outage lasted more than seven hours on 12 June
    • Issue traced to invalid automated quota update

What happened: Global Google Cloud services disrupted by quota error

On 12 June 2025, Google Cloud Platform experienced a significant outage. The incident began at 10:51 PDT and ended at 18:18 PDT. Engineers found an invalid automated quota update triggered API rejections. This affected more than 50 cloud services. These included Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Vertex AI, Cloud SQL and Cloud Pub/Sub.

Customer-facing platforms like Cloud Console and Cloud Shell also failed. Google bypassed the problematic quota checks to recover. Most regions recovered within two hours. The us‑central1 region took longer due to database overload. Google later said full restoration was achieved globally.

    Why it’s important

The outage shows how a single quota change can ripple across many services. It reveals cloud systems’ vulnerability to control‑plane errors. The issue affected essential infrastructure and disrupted major services. It emphasises need for robust error handling in policy systems. The us‑central1 delay highlights regional dependencies in global operations. Users now expect resilience across multiple zones and regions. The event reinforces the value of multi‑cloud or hybrid models.

Providers must improve monitoring and fail‑safes. It also prompts questions about internal testing and deployment processes. The incident shows that uptime relies on more than hardware redundancy. It demands architecture designed to absorb faulty changes and maintain service continuity.
