    What happened

According to Counterpoint‘s China Smartphone Weekly Model Sales Tracker, in the 21st to 24th week of 2024, the period corresponding to the 618 shopping festival, smartphone sales in China increased by 6.8 percent year-on-year. Most Oems are offering price discounts similar to last year, indicating a pick-up in demand. Sales in China’s mobile phone market were strong in July, up 30.5 percent year on year, with total sales reaching 24.2 million units, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

Sales of foreign-branded smartphones, including Apple, rose 2.7% in China in July from a year earlier, according to data released Wednesday by a government-affiliated research firm. Calculations based on data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) show that sales of foreign-branded mobile phones in China rose to 2.38 million units in that month from 2.315 million a year earlier.

    Why it’s important

This indicates that China’s mobile phone market is experiencing a period of rapid growth, and as one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, its market growth can drive the development and application of new technologies. The growth of the Chinese mobile phone market, especially in the high-end segment, also has important implications for the global supply chain. The independent research and development and production capacity of Chinese manufacturers in core components such as chips, displays and cameras are changing the layout of the global mobile phone industry chain. The entry of foreign technology companies into the market has also intensified the competition in the global market, which is conducive to the overall development of the technology market. Such growth is a positive signal for mobile phone manufacturers and the entire supply chain.
