    • 1,000 new FirstNet cell sites to be deployed by end of 2025.
    • Part of a broader $6.3 billion initiative to expand 5G and mission-critical services.

What happened: FirstNet to deploy 1,000 new cell sites across the U.S. by 2025

AT&T, in collaboration with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority), has announced a significant expansion of the FirstNet network, aiming to deploy 1,000 new cell sites across the United States by the end of 2025. This initiative is a component of a larger $6.3 billion investment dedicated to enhancing the FirstNet infrastructure, which includes the development of a standalone 5G core and the expansion of mission-critical services.

The new cell sites are designed to bolster coverage, particularly in underserved and rural areas, ensuring that first responders have reliable communication capabilities during emergencies. This expansion builds upon the existing FirstNet network, which currently spans over 2.99 million square miles and supports more than 7 million connections.

The deployment of these additional sites is expected to enhance the network’s capacity and resilience, providing first responders with improved access to high-speed data and critical communication tools.

    Why it’s important

Reliable communication is essential for first responders to effectively perform their duties, especially during emergencies. The planned expansion of the FirstNet network addresses the need for enhanced coverage and capacity, ensuring that public safety personnel can maintain connectivity in various scenarios.

By investing in the deployment of new cell sites and the development of a dedicated 5G core, AT&T and the FirstNet Authority are taking proactive steps to modernize public safety communications. This initiative not only improves current capabilities but also lays the groundwork for future technological advancements in emergency response.
