    • Fincantieri and Telecom Italia’s Sparkle have partnered to develop solutions for the protection of submarine telecommunications cables.
    • This collaboration aims to enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure amidst rising geopolitical tensions.

What happened: Fincantieri partners with Sparkle for cable protection

Italy’s Fincantieri and Telecom Italia’s submarine cables unit, Sparkle, announced a partnership to develop solutions for the surveillance and protection of submarine telecommunications cables. This collaboration aims to enhance the operational resilience of critical infrastructure, which is essential for Italy’s connectivity and growth in the technology sector. Fincantieri’s Chief Executive, Pierroberto Folgiero, emphasised the importance of digital security and the integration of civilian underwater operations alongside military initiatives. As geopolitical tensions rise, Fincantieri is increasingly investing in the underwater sector, recognising its potential for growth. Sparkle, which owns a fibre-optic network exceeding 600,000 kilometres, predominantly consisting of submarine cables, has been active in protecting these assets. The company has previously signed agreements for cable protection, including one with the Italian Navy in 2022, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding vital communication networks.

    Why it’s important

The partnership between Fincantieri and Sparkle is significant as it addresses the pressing need for enhanced security and resilience in submarine cable infrastructure. With the growing reliance on digital communication, the protection of submarine cables has become vital for maintaining connectivity and supporting economic growth. Submarine cables are the backbone of global internet traffic, and disruptions can have far-reaching consequences for businesses and consumers alike.

As geopolitical tensions escalate, the potential risks to these underwater assets increase, making their protection paramount. This collaboration not only underscores the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure but also reflects a broader industry trend towards integrating military and civilian operations in the realm of digital security.

Additionally, the emphasis on underwater operations by state-controlled entities like Fincantieri signals a strategic shift in prioritising technological resilience. As digital threats evolve, investments in protective measures for submarine cables will likely become a critical focus for companies and governments worldwide. This partnership may set a precedent for future collaborations aimed at securing vital communication networks, ultimately benefiting users by ensuring stable and secure connectivity.
