  • CERIST drives Algeria’s digital transformation through research in AI, IoT, and cybersecurity, managing the .dz domain and fostering innovation.
  • Facing challenges like cybersecurity and infrastructure, CERIST’s Digital Innovation Facility supports startups and academic research.

CERIST’s mission and impact

Founded in 1985, the Centre de Recherche sur l’Information Scientifique et Technique (CERIST) is a cornerstone of Algeria’s technological landscape, operating under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Headquartered in Ben Aknoun, Algiers, CERIST is tasked with advancing research and development in information systems and technologies.

Its missions include developing national scientific and technical information systems, promoting open access to research, and supporting Algeria’s digital transformation. Notably, CERIST manages the .dz domain, a critical role in maintaining Algeria’s digital identity, and operates the Algerian Scientific Journal Platform (ASJP), hosting a vast repository of academic publications.

From 1994 to 2000, CERIST was Algeria’s first public internet service provider, later transitioning to focus on the Algerian Research Network (ARN), connecting universities and research institutions. Its Digital Innovation Facility, launched in 2024, underscores its commitment to fostering startups and advancing fields like big data, IoT, and cybersecurity. Events like the Himaya Innov Days 2024, organised with partners like the Algerian Civil Protection, highlight CERIST’s role in addressing real-world challenges through hackathons and research symposia.

CERIST’s role in a dynamic industry

Algeria’s digital economy is expanding, driven by innovations in AI, IoT, and big data, yet it faces significant hurdles. The industry grapples with integrating into global economic systems while mitigating cybersecurity risks and building robust infrastructure. CERIST’s work in smart home automation, wireless networks, and disaster management technologies, such as those showcased at ICT-DM’2024, positions it as a leader in tackling these challenges. However, the digital economy’s growth demands scalable solutions and skilled talent, areas where CERIST’s training programmes, like its Post-Graduation Specialisation in Big Data, are pivotal.

Despite its achievements, CERIST operates in a competitive global landscape. As noted on LinkedIn, “The inauguration of the Digital Innovation Facility at CERIST marks a significant step for Algeria’s digital transformation, fostering startups and cutting-edge research.” Yet, ensuring consistent funding and navigating bureaucratic hurdles remain critical challenges for sustaining innovation.
