BT’s survey reveals impact of split-screening and streaming on Telecom Networks

BT Group’s latest survey revealed how the UK’s increasing reliance on multi-device usage, including the rising trend of split-screening, is impacting telecom networks. The survey found that 35% of UK adults now regularly use multiple devices during live events, a habit particularly popular among Gen Z (58%). This behavior, which involves multitasking with activities like social media, messaging, shopping, and gaming during major events, is reshaping how people engage with live content. Interestingly, the survey also found that many attendees secretly stream or watch events during social occasions, with 1 in 16 admitting to covertly watching live content at weddings or funerals. The growing demand for connectivity has led to BT forecasting a 15%-28% increase in traffic over the next five years, driven by more immersive 5G experiences and event live-streaming.

Why it is important

The shift toward increased multi-device usage, particularly split-screening, is transforming how the UK consumes live content, putting significant pressure on telecom networks. With events like Euro 2024 and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour seeing millions of people engage in real-time streaming and multi-tasking, telecom operators are facing a surge in data traffic. The shift, especially among younger generations, is not just reshaping consumer behavior but also the expectations for connectivity. BT’s forecasted 15%-28% growth in network traffic over the next five years highlights the need for telecom companies to prepare their infrastructure to support growing demands for high-quality, low-latency experiences. As consumers expect seamless experiences during live events and continue to stream content covertly, telecom operators will need to invest in upgrading their networks, including leveraging 5G standalone technologies, to avoid service disruptions and deliver cutting-edge live experiences. Understanding these trends will ensure that operators can keep pace with evolving customer needs in an increasingly connected world.
