  • BSO has announced plans to create one of Europe’s largest data centers, a massive infrastructure platform designed to handle extensive AI workloads.
  • Subsequent expansions will increase its capacity to 200MW by late 2026, eventually reaching 400MW.

What happened

BSO has announced plans to build one of Europe’s largest AI-focused data centers, named DataOne, in France. The company has taken over an existing Tier-3 data center and plans to expand it into a 400MW facility by 2028. The project is led by Charles-Antoine Beyney and Michael Ourabah, with backing from the Ardian debt fund. Initially, the site will have 80MW of capacity by April 2025, making it the largest AI data center in Europe at that time. Subsequent expansions will increase its capacity to 200MW by late 2026, eventually reaching 400MW. The center will support AI supercomputers and high-density workloads, using 100% renewable energy. It will feature liquid-cooled systems and achieve a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.06–1.15, surpassing European standards. DataOne is designed to serve as a sustainable, high-performance hub for AI infrastructure in Europe.

Why it is important

Firstly, it addresses the growing demand for AI infrastructure, especially as European startups and enterprises seek reliable and scalable computing resources. With the global AI race intensifying, having a robust local data center helps mitigate Europe’s dependence on U.S. tech giants for GPU-powered AI processing, which is crucial for developing advanced AI models. Secondly, the project promotes sustainability, as the data center will run on 100% renewable energy and recycle waste heat to support local industries. This aligns with Europe’s focus on reducing carbon emissions and developing green tech solutions. Lastly, DataOne’s design—featuring liquid cooling and low Power Usage Effectiveness—sets a high standard for energy efficiency, which could influence future AI infrastructure projects across the continent.

Overall, DataOne supports Europe’s ambition to become a leader in AI, while ensuring its growth is sustainable and locally managed.
