Axian Telecom gets $100M to expand broadband

    • Axian Telecom secures $100M from EIB for broadband expansion in Tanzania and Madagascar
    • Funding will boost 4G and 5G networks, improving digital access in underserved areas

What happened: Axian Telecom secures $100M for broadband expansion in Tanzania and Madagascar

On 10 April 2025, AXIAN Telecom, a leading pan-African telecommunications provider, announced a major $100 million funding deal from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The financing will support the expansion of 4G and 5G mobile broadband infrastructure in Tanzania and Madagascar, two of East Africa’s fastest-growing markets.

This investment, which is part of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, is expected to double 4G coverage and fast-track the deployment of 5G networks in both countries. AXIAN Telecom, operating under the Yas brand in these regions, will receive $60 million for its operations in Tanzania and $40 million for Madagascar.

The project aims to enhance digital connectivity, contributing to broader socio-economic development, digital inclusion, and access to services in underserved areas. The EIB’s backing, alongside a European Commission guarantee, highlights the EU’s commitment to addressing the digital divide in Africa.

    Why it’s important

This funding is a significant step toward improving Africa’s digital infrastructure, where internet penetration remains the lowest globally, with only 37% of the population online as of 2023 (according to the International Telecommunication Union). The expansion of 4G and 5G networks in Tanzania and Madagascar will bring faster, more reliable internet to millions of people, many of whom rely on mobile devices as their only gateway to the digital world.

With the internet increasingly vital for education, healthcare, business, and social inclusion, the new investment is expected to drive socio-economic growth, open up new business opportunities, and empower communities in rural areas. By addressing connectivity gaps, AXIAN Telecom’s expansion plans align with broader efforts to bridge Africa’s digital divide and unlock the continent’s full potential.
