    What happened

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), the second-largest maker of personal computer processors, is investigating allegations that its company information was stolen in a cyberattack. In a statement, AMD acknowledged the claims made by a cybercriminal organisation regarding the theft of AMD data and stated that they are collaborating closely with law enforcement and a third-party hosting partner to assess the validity and importance of this data breach.

The investigation follows reports that Intelbroker has purportedly breached AMD’s systems on the BreachForums site, with data reportedly including details on future AMD products, customer databases, financial records, and other sensitive information. On Tuesday, AMD’s shares declined by 2.4% during New York trading, contrasting with a broader rally in the semiconductor industry.

    Why it’s important

AMD is a major player in the semiconductor industry, particularly known for its processors used in personal computers. Any compromise of its data could potentially impact not only the company’s operations but also the security of its products and services.

The incident underscores the ongoing cybersecurity threats faced by technology companies, highlighting the importance of robust security measures and vigilance in safeguarding digital assets against cyberattacks. The market reaction, with AMD’s shares falling amid a broader semiconductor industry rally, reflects investor concern and underscores the potential financial impact of such security breaches on company valuations and shareholder confidence.
