Algérie Télécom accelerates national digital connectivity drive

    • Algérie Télécom and Huawei launched a 400G WDM national backbone, boosting speed and low‑latency connectivity.
    • The company is rolling out FTTH via local microenterprises and launching an AI, cybersecurity and robotics startup fund.

Algérie Télécom launches national 400G backbone

In February 2025, state-owned Algérie Télécom partnered with Huawei to deploy a 400G WDM all-optical backbone covering the entire country. Simultaneously, it is expanding fibre-to-the-home through “Idoom Fibre” and local micro‑enterprises, aiming to raise broadband penetration nationwide.

The rollout builds on the 2018 introduction of optical fibre and efforts to upgrade the copper infrastructure, reflecting the operator’s mission to improve broadband speeds while lowering costs. In parallel, a 1.5 billion‑dinar fund was announced to support startups in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and robotics, reinforcing Algérie Télécom’s broader strategy to foster innovation.

Algérie Télécom powers Algeria’s digital future

Algérie Télécom’s infrastructure upgrades are pivotal to Algeria’s digital ambitions. The 400G backbone lays a technical foundation for high-demand services like cloud computing, e-commerce, remote education and 5G backhaul. Scaling “Idoom Fibre” through micro‑enterprises ensures that even underserved communities gain fast, reliable broadband, contributing to digital inclusion and local economic growth.

These initiatives align with trends across North Africa, where incumbent telcos evolve into full-spectrum digital service providers—integrating core connectivity with innovation ecosystems and startup support. However, transforming legacy infrastructure presents challenges: scaling fibre alongside legacy copper systems, safeguarding nationwide networks against cyber threats, and balancing public ownership with market competition.
