RIPE NCC and ITU collaborate to promote IPv6 deployment

  • RIPE NCC and ITU signed a Joint Declaration to promote Internet infrastructure development, focusing on IPv6 deployment and capacity building.
  • The collaboration aims to enhance Internet resilience and connectivity in underserved regions, aligning with global sustainable development goals.

What happened: RIPE NCC and ITU sign agreement to promote IPv6 and internet development

On 7 March 2025, the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) signed a Joint Declaration titled ‘Promoting and Developing Internet Infrastructure, IPv6 Deployment and Capacity Building’. The signing ceremony took place during the Regional Development Forum for the Arab States in Amman, Jordan, on 3 February 2025.

This collaboration is part of RIPE NCC’s broader strategy to strengthen ties with international and regional partners, highlighting its role in supporting Internet infrastructure development across Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

IPv4 vs. IPv6: What’s the difference between the two protocols?

Why it’s important

The deployment of IPv6 is considered by some to be an important task to accommodate the growing number of devices and services requiring Internet connectivity. But IPv4 remains highly practical due to its wide compatibility and lower deployment costs. Many networks still rely on NAT and established IPv4 infrastructure, making it more efficient for current needs.

By partnering with the ITU, RIPE NCC aims to accelerate IPv6 adoption, ensuring a more robust and scalable Internet infrastructure. This initiative is particularly significant for developing countries that need technical assistance to implement IPv6 effectively, thereby promoting global digital inclusion and supporting sustainable development.
