RCS adopts MLS for enhanced security

  • GSMA’s latest RCS standard integrates Messaging Layer Security (MLS) for end-to-end encryption.
  • Apple and Google plan to support this update in their messaging platforms.

What happened: Integration of MLS into RCS standard

On 14 March 2025, the GSM Association (GSMA) announced that the latest Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard now includes end-to-end encryption (E2EE) based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. This enhancement aims to provide secure and interoperable messaging across different platforms. RCS, which enhances traditional SMS messaging by offering features like group chats, file transfers, and typing indicators, will now benefit from MLS’s robust security framework. Apple has expressed support for this development, stating plans to incorporate E2EE RCS messaging into future updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. Similarly, Google has committed to implementing the updated RCS standard, emphasizing the importance of secure messaging experiences for users.

Why it’s important

The incorporation of MLS into the RCS standard marks a significant advancement in messaging security. By adopting a standardized encryption protocol, RCS ensures that messages remain confidential and secure across various devices and platforms. This development addresses previous concerns about the lack of encryption in cross-platform messaging, particularly between iOS and Android users. The collaboration among industry leaders like Apple and Google highlights a unified effort to enhance user privacy and security in digital communications.
