  • Mandatory two-factor authentication starts July 2025.
  • API users will need an API Key for updates.

What happened: PeeringDB’s new security measures

Starting July 1, 2025, PeeringDB will implement mandatory Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for users making updates or accessing contact information within its platform. This decision aims to bolster security and safeguard user accounts against unauthorized access.

The introduction of 2FA aligns with industry best practices, recognizing the growing threats in cybersecurity. Users will have various options to choose from, including Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) applications, Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) tokens, and passkeys.

This transition is essential not only for individual users but also for organizations that rely on PeeringDB for interconnection data. The platform serves as a critical resource for network operators and data centers globally, making security enhancements paramount.

Users are encouraged to update their settings ahead of the deadline to ensure seamless access to their accounts. For more information about these updates, visit the official PeeringDB website or read their API documentation.

Why it’s important

The shift to mandatory 2FA is a crucial step in enhancing account security, especially for those who manage sensitive data. As cyber threats continue to evolve, implementing additional security measures helps mitigate risks associated with unauthorized access to user accounts. By requiring a second factor for authentication, PeeringDB is taking proactive steps to protect its users and maintain the integrity of its database.

Furthermore, organizations transitioning to personal accounts from shared role accounts will find the new system beneficial. With the ability to manage multiple second factors and the option to download backup codes, users can ensure they have continued access even if their primary methods fail. This flexibility is vital for maintaining operational continuity for organizations relying on PeeringDB for their interconnection needs.
