  • Nokia partners with TenneT to provide optical networking for eight 2GW offshore wind platforms in the Dutch North Sea, enhancing renewable energy delivery.
  • This initiative supports Europe’s transition to greener energy, ensuring reliable communication for efficient energy management.

What happened: Nokia connects TenneT’s offshore wind platforms

Nokia has been selected by TenneT, a leading European offshore transmission system operator, to provide critical optical networking technology for eight new offshore wind platforms in the Dutch North Sea. These platforms will deliver an impressive 2 gigawatts (2GW) of renewable energy to the mainland.

The project marks a significant step in Europe’s transition to greener energy and aims to enhance the efficiency of offshore wind energy transmission. Nokia’s optical network solution, which supports long-distance transmission, will connect these offshore platforms to TenneT’s onshore telecommunications infrastructure. This strategic partnership facilitates the monitoring and management of remote energy sources, ensuring reliable energy flow as Europe moves away from fossil fuels.

Why it’s important

This development is pivotal for several reasons. Firstly, it underscores the critical role of digital infrastructure in the renewable energy sector. As nations strive for climate neutrality by 2050, integrating robust communication networks with renewable energy sources becomes essential.

The collaboration between Nokia and TenneT exemplifies how technological innovation can enhance energy efficiency, paving the way for future projects. The project aligns with broader industry trends towards standardisation and operational resilience in energy transmission.

With increasing investments in offshore wind farms across Europe, the demand for reliable and efficient communication networks will only grow. This initiative also reflects the global push for sustainable energy solutions, particularly following the commitments made during COP28.As renewable energy becomes a cornerstone of energy policy, advancements in optical networking technology will play a crucial role in ensuring that energy sources are not only renewable but also reliable.
