IETF LLC takes over RFC production center

  • IETF LLC assumes RPC management under Employer of Record arrangement
  • New management structure and cost savings expected

What happened: New management structure and strategic direction

The Internet Engineering Task Force Administration LLC (IETF LLC) and Association Management Solutions LLC (AMS) have reached a pivotal agreement regarding the management of the RFC Production Centre (RPC). Following an extensive review of the recent developments in the RFC Editor function, it has been decided that the IETF LLC will assume management of the existing RPC staff under an Employer of Record arrangement with AMS.

This change, effective from 1 January 2025, is a response to the significant developments the RFC Editor function has undergone over the past few years. These include the introduction of XML, the new RFC Editor model outlined in RFC 9280, which introduced the RSWG/RSAB and removed the RSE role, the modernisation of RPC tools, and the ongoing requests for GitHub and Markdown editing.

The new arrangement is expected to bring cost savings due to the transfer of management responsibilities to existing LLC staff.

Why it’s important

This transition is crucial for the continued development of the RFC Series, as the management of the RPC will now be more closely aligned with the IETF LLC’s strategic goals. Over the last few years, the RFC Editor function has undergone significant changes, including the introduction of XML, new models for editorial oversight, and evolving tools for document editing. The transfer of RPC management responsibilities to the IETF LLC will ensure these changes are met with appropriate leadership and resource allocation.

The restructuring also reflects a growing need for increased community engagement and direct oversight. With the increased workload, a new management structure has been introduced, splitting the Director, RFC Production Center role into two distinct positions: Director of RPC Operations and Director of RPC Communications and Strategy. This change is expected to streamline the decision-making process, improve communication, and better support the development of the RFC Series.
