  • The IETF LLC has completed the second IASA2 retrospective, reviewing progress since 2021.
  • Future IASA2 retrospectives will be conducted every three years, with the next one scheduled for 2027.

What happened: Review of IETF administrative support activity since 2021

The IETF Administration LLC (IETF LLC) has completed the second retrospective of the IETF Administrative Support Activity version 2.0 (IASA2), following the guidelines set in BCP 101. The report, which was developed with community input, reviews changes since the 2021 IASA2 retrospective and highlights action points for future improvements. One of the key recommendations from the first report was that future retrospectives should be conducted every three years. As a result, the second retrospective report provides insights on how the IETF Administrative Support Activity has evolved and what adjustments should be made moving forward. The report also establishes a schedule for future retrospectives, with the next one set for 2027.

Why it is important

The IASA2 retrospectives are a critical mechanism for maintaining the effectiveness of the IETF Administrative Support Activity and ensuring it continues to meet the needs of the IETF community. The second retrospective, published in December 2024, highlights key developments and adjustments since the 2021 review, providing valuable insights into how the administrative functions of the IETF have evolved. These reports offer a structured approach to identifying successes, challenges, and areas needing improvement, which helps to refine and optimize the IETF’s administrative operations.

The periodic reviews, mandated by BCP 101, serve to maintain transparency, accountability, and responsiveness within the IETF LLC, fostering a more efficient and sustainable support framework. By committing to these retrospectives every three years, the IETF ensures continuous adaptation to the changing needs of the internet standards community. This process is essential to uphold the IETF’s long-term relevance and effectiveness in a dynamic technological landscape, ensuring its administrative functions align with its global mission to develop internet standards.
