  • ICANN unveils draft Code of Conduct for participant disclosures.
  • The initiative aims to enhance transparency and ethics within community processes.

What happened: ICANN proposes new code of conduct for community participation

ICANN has released a draft of the ICANN Community Participant Code of Conduct, which addresses the need for clear and transparent disclosures in the multistakeholder model. The code is part of broader efforts to enhance the ethical framework guiding participation within the ICANN community, particularly regarding Statements of Interest (SOIs).

The draft outlines expectations for participants to fully disclose their interests, ensuring that all perspectives are transparently represented during community discussions. ICANN is currently soliciting input from the community on the draft code and the accompanying Enforcement Guidance.

This initiative follows conversations within the community that highlighted gaps in the current SOI processes, which were seen as inadequate in providing sufficient transparency. The draft Code is intended to complement existing ICANN documents, such as the Community Anti-Harassment Policy and Expected Standards of Behavior, which already govern interactions within the ICANN ecosystem.

Why it’s important

The introduction of the ICANN Community Participant Code of Conduct represents a significant step towards ensuring transparency and ethical standards in community participation. By addressing the gaps in current Statement of Interest processes, ICANN aims to foster a more open and accountable environment.

This is particularly important in ICANN’s multistakeholder model, which relies on a diverse range of interests and perspectives. The enhanced disclosure practices will help prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that all participants in the ICANN community have a clear understanding of the motivations and affiliations behind the discussions.

Additionally, the inclusion of enforcement guidance ensures that ethical breaches are handled consistently and fairly, strengthening the integrity of ICANN’s decision-making processes.
