What happened: ICANN Roadshow in Jamaica focuses on DNS Security

In December 2024, ICANN’s VP of Stakeholder Engagement, Rodrigo De La Parra, and other key members, including Nicolás Antoniello, collaborated with the Jamaican Internet community for a successful roadshow. The event focused on critical topics such as DNS Security and Abuse, the New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) Program, and ICANN’s Applicant Support Program.

Key discussions also revolved around DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and the KINDNS framework for DNS resolver operations. A notable success of the event was the active participation of local ICANN Fellows and community leaders from various advisory committees.

The roadshow attracted 50 in-person participants and almost 100 online participants from Jamaica and across the Caribbean. A panel discussion featuring experts from the Caribbean Telecommunications Union and University of the Commonwealth Caribbean highlighted challenges and opportunities for digital transformation in the region.

Furthermore, meetings with local Internet service providers and universities explored potential future collaborations on DNSSEC, KINDNS, and academic outreach.

Why it’s important

The roadshow was a crucial initiative for ICANN’s ongoing efforts to engage with regional communities and foster discussions on key internet governance topics, particularly DNS security and policy development. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, this event provided an opportunity for the Jamaican and Caribbean communities to engage with global experts and strengthen local capacity around critical issues like DNSSEC and domain name management.

The partnership with local Internet service providers and universities is expected to enhance knowledge-sharing, improve DNS infrastructure security, and potentially lead to further collaborations, supporting the secure and stable operation of the global Internet. The event also reinforced ICANN’s commitment to regional collaboration in shaping the future of the internet.
