What happened: Cisco’s $1.3M equipment donation enhances IETF meeting networks

On 2 April 2025, Cisco announced a donation of new equipment valued at $1.3 million to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). This contribution aims to support the IETF meeting networks, which facilitate collaboration among over 1,000 onsite and 500 remote participants during the organisation’s thrice-yearly plenary meetings. The donated equipment includes Wi-Fi 7 access points, modern access switches, and high-performance servers.

These additions are designed to enhance network performance for IETF Hackathons and Working Group sessions. Juan Carlos Zúñiga, Distinguished Engineer of Global Technology Standards at Cisco, stated that providing the latest wireless and wired technologies is crucial for efficient IETF meetings and optimal user experiences for all participants.

    Why it’s important

The IETF meeting networks are integral to the development and standardisation of internet protocols and technologies. By donating advanced networking equipment, Cisco supports the IETF’s mission to create high-quality technical standards for the global internet.

This collaboration enables both onsite and remote participants to engage effectively in the standardisation process, fostering innovation and the evolution of internet technologies. Cisco’s ongoing commitment, including its role as a Global Host, underscores the importance of industry partnerships in advancing the internet’s infrastructure and capabilities.
