A world without the internet shows why shutdowns are disastrous

    • Internet outages in disaster movies highlight the potential catastrophic effects of widespread Internet shutdowns.
    • The loss of the Internet could cause economic instability, loss of contact, and disruption of daily activities, threatening global societies.

What happened: The impact of an internet shutdown shows a world without connectivity

In disaster movies, when the Internet goes down, it’s often a harbinger of things to come—something catastrophic is about to happen. As the Internet continues to permeate every aspect of our lives, it has become an essential lifeline that, when cut off, triggers a ripple effect of disruptions across society. From economic chaos to a breakdown in communication and everyday activities, the consequences of a widespread Internet shutdown are far-reaching. The Internet’s role in modern society is undeniable, and its absence would have profound implications for both individuals and economies.

In recent films such as Leave the World Behind and The Life of Chuck, the loss of the Internet signals the beginning of a larger disaster. These films, while fictional, tap into a real-world fear—what would happen if we lost the ability to connect, work, and function in a digitally dependent world? One of the most immediate consequences of an Internet outage would be the loss of contact with the outside world. People would be unable to easily reach family or friends, leading to feelings of isolation and panic. Additionally, misinformation would spread quickly as rumors circulate without a reliable means of verification. With communication broken down, the ability to understand what’s happening globally would be severely compromised, leaving many in the dark.

    Why it’s important

An Internet shutdown isn’t just a plot device for movies; it’s a real-world issue that has severe consequences for both individuals and economies. In today’s world, the Internet is not only a tool for communication but also a cornerstone of economic stability. According to Forbes, one in five workers now works remotely, a shift made possible by the Internet. Without access to online platforms, these workers would be unable to perform their jobs, creating economic instability on a massive scale.

Beyond work, the Internet facilitates many daily activities, such as online shopping, banking, education, and healthcare. A world without the Internet would make even basic transactions—like buying groceries or visiting a doctor—difficult or impossible. The widespread impact on education, especially through distance learning, would disproportionately affect students in rural areas or those with disabilities. For many, the Internet is the only means of accessing essential services. This dependency on the Internet makes its potential loss even more alarming. As global economies become increasingly digital, the need for reliable Internet access has never been more critical. Understanding the potential economic and social fallout of an Internet shutdown is key to preparing for and mitigating the risks associated with such disruptions.
