Have you ever forgotten the details of a video just seconds after watching it? Or found yourself weary of watching hours-long videos? The Google Bard’s YouTube Extension might be the solution.
On November 21, 2023, Google announced an upgrade to Bard’s ability to understand YouTube videos. The company provided an example to showcase the improvement: when searching for videos on how to make an olive oil cake, you can ask Bard about the number of eggs required in the recipe from the first video. “We’ve heard you want a deeper engagement with YouTube videos. So, we’re expanding the YouTube Extension to comprehend some video content, enabling richer conversations with Bard,” was announced on Bard’s updates page.
Before this enhancement, Google had been consistently upgrading their artificial intelligence chatbot, Bard.
On November 15, 2023, Google made Bard accessible to teenagers in most countries, aiming to inspire them, aid in discovering new hobbies, and provide solutions to everyday problems.
On October 4, 2023, Bard introduced a feature that allows users to use images in prompts, pin and rename conversations, among other things. This feature is now live in over 40 languages.
On September 19, 2023, Bard Extensions was launched in English. This novel way to interact and collaborate with Bard enables it to analyze your personal information in Google’s tools, such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Flights and hotels. As a result, Bard can answer comprehensive questions using real-time information. However, in this version, Bard only supports the search of specific videos and cannot assist with video content

Current usage situation
Jack Krawczyk, a team member at Bard, praised their work and team in X, even amidst differing opinions. However, users provided negative feedback after testing the new feature, pointing out issues such as content reading errors and slow reading speeds. To compete with similar products, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing Chat, Bard seems to need further enhancements in generative AI accuracy and flexibility.
Google isn’t the first company to offer such video analysis services. Bilibili, a popular video website in China, has a feature where you can request a summary of video content. By tagging ‘an interesting programmer’ in the comments, the platform can provide a summary of about 100 words. It’s impressive that it only takes five minutes to summarize an hour-long video.
