  • Chainalysis acquires Alterya to enhance fraud detection.
  • Alterya’s AI solution monitors over $8 billion in transactions monthly.

What happened: Chainalysis acquires Alterya to strengthen fraud detection capabilities

Chainalysis, a leader in blockchain data analysis, has announced the acquisition of Alterya, an AI-powered fraud detection solution. Alterya’s AI technology, which already partners with major players like Coinbase, Binance, and Block, monitors more than $8 billion in fiat and cryptocurrency transactions each month.

The platform has successfully identified over $10 billion in payments linked to scams last year. Ilan Zimmer, Coinbase’s director of payment and operational risk, praised Alterya for its role in identifying wallet addresses associated with known investment scams, helping the exchange protect its customers.

The acquisition will allow Chainalysis to integrate Alterya’s fraud detection tools into its existing blockchain data platform, strengthening its ability to uncover and mitigate fraudulent activity in the crypto space.

Why it’s important

The acquisition of Alterya by Chainalysis comes at a time when the crypto sector faces increasing concerns over fraud and scams. Last year, the total value lost to crypto crimes, including hacks and scams, surpassed $3.01 billion, reflecting a 15% increase from 2023.

As one of the highest-grossing categories of crypto crime annually, fraud detection remains a critical focus for industry players. By integrating Alterya’s AI-powered fraud detection capabilities, Chainalysis aims to provide a more comprehensive risk management solution that includes prevention, compliance, and remediation.

This acquisition is a strategic move for Chainalysis, as it seeks to expand its suite of tools for ensuring security and trust in blockchain networks. The integration of Alterya’s solution will enhance the effectiveness of Chainalysis’ existing platform, which already serves a wide range of clients across the crypto and fintech industries.
