    • Amazon’s CTO, Dr. Werner Vogels, outlines key principles for cost-effective IT architecture in a session hosted by Telkomsel.
    • Emphasis on continuous cost optimisation and sustainability resonates with IT professionals.

Muhammad Rayhan, VP of IT Enterprise Architecture and Strategy at Telkomsel, recently hosted an exclusive session featuring Dr. Werner Vogels, Amazon’s Chief Technology Officer. This event provided Telkomsel’s IT team with a unique opportunity to explore the principles of cost-efficient cloud architecture directly from one of the most influential figures in the field.

Muhammad Rayhan on ‘The Frugal Architect’ principles

Dr. Vogels introduced the “Frugal Architect” principles during AWS rein late 2023, a framework that Muhammad Rayhan has emphasized in Telkomsel’s strategic approach to IT. These principles stress the importance of integrating cost considerations alongside traditional non-functional requirements such as security, compliance, and scalability. Dr. Vogels’ key message—designing with cost efficiency from the beginning and continuously refining systems—aligns with Rayhan’s vision for Telkomsel’s IT architecture.

Architecting is a series of trade-offs. The old version of me will say Microservices Architecture is the best. But after building and running Microservices production for years, I was proven wrong. It all depends on the context and situation we are in.

Rayhan’s perspective on cost and sustainability synergy

One of the standout aspects of Dr. Vogels’ presentation, as highlighted by Muhammad Rayhan, was the connection between cost efficiency and sustainability. Dr. Vogels argued that efficient system design not only reduces costs but also lessens environmental impact. This holistic view resonates with Rayhan’s commitment to aligning cost management with broader sustainability goals, ensuring that Telkomsel’s architecture supports long-term success both financially and environmentally.
