Onatel’s role for telecommunications and education in Burundi

Onatel has played a key role in Burundi’s telecommunications sector by successfully organising professional training and the installation of a broadband wireless network in partnership with the ITU, which has significantly upgraded the country’s communications infrastructure and digitisation capacity, while at the same time nurturing local technical talent and laying a solid foundation for the country’s digital transformation and future development. 

Onatel drives the country’s digital transformation

In Burundi, Onatel successfully organises professional training and installation of a broadband wireless network through a partnership with ITU. This training not only upgrades the technical skills of local experts, but also contributes to the digital transformation and IT development in Burundi. Onatel’s professional training covers various modules such as preparation, installation and configuration of network equipment, as well as configuration and operation of the network management system, which resulted in 13 local engineers receiving certificates and assisting in the completion of the network installation.

Onatel’s network installation and commissioning work are successfully executed in Bujumbura Mairie, including the installation, commissioning and implementation of RF equipment, as well as network design and coverage implementation. The coverage of the network includes three sites in the capital city of Bujumbura and sites in several other cities across the country. The network is now operational, providing 212 PCs and other related LAN equipment to schools and hospitals, significantly enhancing Burundi’s communications capacity and service levels in key areas such as education and healthcare.
