Makerere University has developed a new Mobile Application to aid the teaching of Mathematics using performing arts in Lower Secondary Curriculum. It’s the MusickingMaths App. The App is an interactive digital platform between the learner and the knowledge facilitator to support the learners in creating songs about mathematical concepts learned. The created songs are shared with the knowledge facilitator for evaluation and feedback on the learners’ performance of the mathematical concepts.
Historical foundation and development
The university’s genesis as a technical school, offering practical courses in trades such as carpentry and mechanics, was just the beginning of its illustrious journey. Its transformation over the years reflects a significant expansion of academic horizons, including the introduction of medical, agricultural, and veterinary sciences, as well as teacher training programs. By 1935, it had already established itself as the epicentre of higher education in East Africa.
The affiliation with the University of London in 1949 was a pivotal moment, offering degree programs that were recognised and respected on a global scale. The formation of the University of East Africa in 1963, in conjunction with the University of Nairobi and the University of Dar es Salaam, marked a new chapter in regional academic cooperation. However, the true milestone of independence came in 1970 with the enactment of an Act of Parliament, which declared Makerere University an autonomous national institution.

About Makerere University
Founded in 1922 as a modest technical school, Makerere University stands as one of the most ancient and esteemed universities on the African continent. In the first month of its inception, what was then called Uganda Technical College welcomed 14 day students to study Carpentry, Building, and Mechanics. The institution swiftly introduced a range of additional subjects, including Medical Care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, and Teacher Training. Over time, it grew to be recognised as a hub for higher education across East Africa by 1935. In 1937, the College took steps towards becoming a higher education provider, initiating post-school certificate courses.
