IAB announces NEMOPS workshop to shape future of network management

  • The Next Era of Network Management Operations (NEMOPS) workshop will begin by assessing the impacts of the previous IAB workshop on both network operations and protocol development.
  • Some members of the workshop program committee will engage in outreach at network operator events.

A workshop organised by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) aims to chart a path for the development of future network management protocols and techniques. Recommendations from the NEMOPS workshop are expected to inform efforts of standardisation development organisations such as the IETF, groups such as the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), as well as implementers, operational groups and other entities around the world.

Main contents of the workshop

IAB has announced the NEMOPS workshop, aimed at redefining network management protocols and techniques for the future. Scheduled for December 3, 2024, the online event seeks to assess the outcomes of a previous IAB workshop and its impact on network operations and protocol development.

The NEMOPS workshop is a crucial opportunity for us to align the needs of network operators with the advancements in protocol development, ensuring that we build a resilient future for network management.

Dhruv Dhody, IAB member

The NEMOPS workshop will build on the findings of the 2002 workshop, which established key requirements for network management and led to the development of several important protocols, including NETCONF and YANG. With the rapid evolution of technology over the past two decades, this workshop will review previous recommendations and identify operational barriers that have hindered implementation. According to Dhruv Dhody, IAB member, “The NEMOPS workshop is a crucial opportunity for us to align the needs of network operators with the advancements in protocol development, ensuring that we build a resilient future for network management.”

Key goals include collaborating with industry stakeholders, network operators, and protocol engineers to outline new requirements for future network management operations. The recommendations generated will inform standardisation development organisations, such as the IETF and the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF).

About IETF

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), founded in 1986, is the premier standards development organisation (SDO) for the Internet. The IETF makes voluntary standards that are often adopted by Internet users, network operators, and equipment vendors, and it thus helps shape the trajectory of the development of the Internet. But in no way does the IETF control, or even patrol, the Internet.
