Gamtel transforms from a traditional telecommunications provider into a leading technology-driven enterprise in The Gambia. It showcases the company’s strategic advancements in infrastructure, including international connectivity and innovative services, as well as its ongoing efforts to incorporate e-solutions like e-learning and e-health.

Modern infrastructure and diverse services

Gamtel’s commitment to progress is evident in its continuous efforts to enhance its infrastructure and service offerings. In the year 2000, the company expanded its reach by establishing a subsidiary GSM operator, Gambia Cellular Company Ltd (GAMCEL), marking its entry into the mobile service arena. This move was a significant step in addressing the growing demand for mobile connectivity in The Gambia.

In recent years, Gamtel has diversified its portfolio, embracing cutting-edge technologies to provide a range of services. The introduction of International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC), IP-MPLS/Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and backhauling solutions such as dark fibre are just a few examples of the company’s efforts to offer comprehensive e-Solutions. These initiatives aim to meet the increasing needs of businesses and consumers while maintaining cost efficiency.

Looking ahead, Gamtel is working on integrating Electronic Education (E-Learning), Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce), and Electronic Medicine (E-Health) into its service offerings. These upcoming ventures underscore the company’s commitment to leveraging technology for social and economic development in The Gambia.

International connectivity and industry leadership

Gamtel’s strategic investments in international infrastructure have significantly enhanced its capabilities. The company is connected to the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) submarine fibre optic cable, which spans 21 countries from France to South Africa. This connection includes three international gateways with a total capacity of 15 GBPS, with plans to expand by an additional 10 GBPS and a 155 Mbps backup link with Sonatel in Senegal.

Holding a 49% ownership stake in the ACE Gambia segment, Gamtel enjoys a competitive advantage in the market. This substantial share, combined with the Gambia government’s support, positions Gamtel as the leading telecommunication provider in the country, capable of offering unmatched services and reliability.
