  • Telia has entered into a partnership with Brookfield to enhance its AI capabilities.
  • The collaboration aims to advance the telecommunications company’s sovereign AI strategy.

What happened: Telia secures deal with Brookfield to enhance AI sovereignty

Swedish telecom operator Telia has announced a strategic partnership with Brookfield, a global asset manager, to accelerate its development of sovereign AI capabilities. The collaboration will allow Telia to tap into Brookfield’s extensive AI infrastructure and investment expertise, enabling the telecom giant to improve its data analytics and AI-driven solutions. The agreement also aims to ensure that Telia’s AI tools remain fully under its control, positioning the company to retain sovereignty over critical technologies in a rapidly evolving market.

This partnership underscores Telia’s commitment to keeping its AI tools within its own governance, bypassing potential risks associated with third-party providers. The deal was revealed in a press release published on the Telecoms website.

Why this is important

AI is increasingly critical to telecommunications companies, especially for improving operational efficiencies, personalising customer services, and enabling advanced network management. By partnering with Brookfield, Telia secures a competitive edge in maintaining full control over its AI infrastructure, a crucial factor as telecoms become more integrated with AI-driven technologies. This deal also reflects a broader trend where major telecom operators are shifting towards sovereign AI models.

Telia’s decision to strengthen its AI sovereignty comes amidst a growing push from tech firms and governments to retain control over emerging technologies and reduce dependency on external vendors. The telecom sector is no stranger to such concerns, as similar partnerships have emerged in recent months. For example, BT Group also announced efforts to bolster its AI capabilities under British governance. These developments signal the future of telecom AI, where control, security, and autonomy are becoming increasingly valuable assets.
