Google Maps No Longer Shows Gas Stations

Google Maps has taken a significant step towards catering to the needs of electric vehicle (EV) owners by prioritising features that revolve around electric mobility. Notably, the application will no longer display petrol stations as prominently to EV drivers.

 EV-Centric Features Calibrated

Google Maps adjusted its points of interest categories for electric vehicle users on Android Auto. This move places greater emphasis on electric-centric amenities, such as charging stations, while relegating petrol stations to a less prominent position. The shift, which aligns with the company’s focus on sustainable transportation solutions, has been in effect since 2022 for EV drivers.

The app’s Categories menu, previously including petrol stations among other destinations, has now made charging points a prominent choice. This alteration not only aids drivers in locating charging stations during critical times but also reflects the growing integration of electric cars into navigation systems.

A Google spokesperson, Pearl Xu, stated:

“To help people get the most relevant information when navigating, last year we added the ability for EV drivers to see a shortcut for charging stations instead of petrol stations on Google Maps for Android Auto.”

This feature was initially introduced in 2020 for vehicles equipped with Google’s built-in software for vehicles.

The suite of electric vehicle-centric capabilities in Google Maps includes several practical functions:

Real-time Charging Port Availability: Users can easily check the real-time availability of charging ports at nearby stations, eliminating the need to wait in line.

Charging Speed Filters: A ‘very fast’ charging filter enables users to identify stations with chargers of 150 kilowatts or higher, providing a rapid power boost in under 40 minutes. Alternatively, ‘fast’ chargers (50kW or higher) are also available.

Plug Type Filters: To ensure compatibility, users can filter stations based on their EV’s plug type, streamlining the charging process.

Adding Charging Stops to Trips: Google Maps will recommend optimal charging stops based on factors like traffic conditions, charge level, and energy consumption, enhancing the convenience of longer trips.

Charging Stations in Search Results: Charging stations located at places like supermarkets are highlighted in search results, allowing users to combine errands with charging pit stops.

 EV Market Expansion Drives Impact

While this enhancement has been accessible to EV drivers for some time, its impact is becoming more pronounced as the EV market expands. This includes vehicles equipped with Google’s in-built software like the Polestar 2, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Cadillac Lyriq, and the forthcoming Acura ZDX.

Although Google’s prioritisation of EV-related features is noteworthy, many EVs continue to rely on phone-to-car projection systems. For these users, accessing Google Maps via their smartphones aims to streamline the process of locating charging stations, which remains an area of concern for many EV owners.

While challenges persist in refining EV routing options, Google’s efforts to simplify the search for charging points signify a step in the right direction.
