WhatsApp starts rolling out Passkeys on iOS

    • WhatsApp says it will roll out support for passwords in the iOS version of the app.
    • With this feature enabled, users of Meta’s encrypted messaging app can sign in using their iPhone biometrics for login, which is Face ID or Touch ID or their phone’s passcode.
    • Passkey is a technology developed by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with major companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft.
    • It enables users to log in using secure methods such as facial recognition or biometrics instead of traditional passwords.

Meta’s WhatsApp is now rolling out Passkeys support for the iPhone version of the app. This means that users only need to log in once to set up their account using their password and not have to enter it again.

    The Passkeys support

Last October, Meta began offering Passkeys support to Android WhatsApp users, and a few months later, the iPhone version began supporting Passkeys as well.

According to WhatsApp spokesperson Zade Alsawah, iOS users will see the app “in the coming weeks”, so if you haven’t seen it yet, stay tuned.

With this feature enabled, users of Meta’s encrypted messaging app can sign in using their iPhone biometrics for login, which is Face ID or Touch ID or their phone’s passcode.

How to set up Passkeys support

Setting up the key is relatively easy, but the application doesn’t provide it to the user at startup and they have to go to the ‘Settings’ page to access it.

Next, select ‘Account’ and search for ‘Passkeys.’

This will prompt a user to log in to their existing WhatsApp account, which they currently use when they choose to ‘Create Passkey.’ It will have users scan their Face ID or Touch ID to complete the setup.

    Other information about Passkeys support

Passkey is a technology developed by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with major companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft.

It enables users to log in using secure methods such as facial recognition or biometrics instead of traditional passwords, eliminating the need to create and enter passwords.

Other apps and platforms have also adopted Passkeys, which is available on both iOS and Android because they have compatible devices that support passwordless authentication.
