Samsung Electronics has appointed a new chief for its semiconductor division to address a “chip crisis” and boost competitiveness in the high-end AI chip market, where it lags behind rivals.

New leadership for Samsung’s semiconductor division

In a strategic move to address a persistent “chip crisis” and regain market share in the booming AI chip industry, Samsung Electronics has appointed Young Hyun Jun as the new chief of its semiconductor division. The appointment, effective immediately, sees Jun shifting from his previous role as head of the company’s future business planning unit. The change comes as Samsung faces competition from rivals such as SK Hynix, who dominate the high bandwidth memory (HBM) chip segment used in AI applications.

Boosting competitiveness in AI chip market

Samsung’s market share in DRAM chips used in various tech devices remains strong, but it lags in the increasingly important HBM chips segment, where SK Hynix controls over 90% of the mainstream HBM3 market. With Jun’s appointment, Samsung aims to catch up in this niche market and strengthen its future competitiveness. Jun, who has vast experience in the memory chip business and has also led Samsung’s battery arm, is expected to bring his management know-how to address the current chip crisis.

Internal reshuffling to strengthen strategy

The reshuffling within Samsung’s leadership team also sees Kye Hyun Kyung, who had led the semiconductor division since 2022, moving into Jun’s former role as head of future business planning. This internal restructuring demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to renewing its strategic direction and positioning for growth in the future. With the new leadership in place, Samsung aims to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor market and address the ongoing chip crisis.
