What happened

Apple and Nvidia are reportedly in discussions to join OpenAI in a major funding round, a new round of investment that could push the ChatGPT maker’s valuation to more than $100 billion. This investment is in line with Apple’s efforts to integrate advanced AI like ChatGPT into its future products. Nvidia’s potential investment will strengthen its position as a hardware provider driving OpenAI’s AI advancements. Microsoft is already a major investor in OpenAI and may increase its stake.

“Apple and Nvidia’s investment in OpenAI will be a clear signal that they are committed to leading the way in AI,” said Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer at OpenAI. “This funding round is critical as we continue to expand our capabilities and partnerships.” The exact amount each company will invest remains undisclosed, but the total amount raised could mark the largest funding round in AI history.

Why it’s important

This round of funding shows the tech giant’s emphasis on the field of artificial intelligence and its recognition of the potential of OpenAI technology. If the negotiations between Apple and Nvidia are successful, the top three tech giants in the world by market capitalization will all become OpenAI shareholders.

OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT now has more than 200 million weekly active users, and the company’s customer usage rate is 92% among Fortune 500 companies worldwide. This shows that OpenAI’s products have a wide range of applications and influence in the market. The new round of funding will help OpenAI acquire more computing power to support the further development of its AI technology and other operating expenses. At the same time, the new round of financing is expected to ease OpenAI’s financial situation and support its continued innovation and market expansion in the field of artificial intelligence, reflecting the future development of AI technology’s reliance on strong industrial cooperation and strategic investment.
