IBM announces a significant expansion in Ireland, hiring 800 AI-focused positions across research, sales, and consulting. This marks the largest job creation announcement in the country’s multinational sector in 2023.

Expansion of AI-backed jobs in Ireland

IBM, an US IT software and consultancy provider, has announced plans to hire up to 800 additional employees in Ireland. These new roles, focused on AI-supported advanced software development, represent the largest job announcement in the country’s multinational sector this year. IDA Ireland, the state investment agency, has welcomed this expansion, emphasising its contribution to Ireland’s technology ecosystem.

The long-standing presence of IBM in Ireland, which goes back almost 65 years and hasn’t stopped developing, ultimately reflects the company’s global strategy. This most recent investment not only reaffirms IBM Ireland as a strategic point for business expansion but also underlines Ireland’s attractiveness to other top foreign companies seeking to leverage their digitalisation, research, and innovation strengths. This project,  funded by the Irish government through IDA Ireland, is set to have a significant impact on Ireland’s economy, cultivating job creation and developing innovative culture.

Roles in key growth areas

The new positions will span research and development, digital sales, and consulting, aligning with IDA Ireland’s focus on key growth areas like cloud computing, AI, quantum technology, and cybersecurity. IBM, already one of the largest multinational employers in Ireland with 3,000 staff, sees this expansion as a way to further advance its capabilities in these strategically important fields.

Importance of foreign multinationals

Ireland’s economy relies heavily on foreign multinationals, which have almost doubled their workforce in the past decade to account for approximately 11% of the entire labour market. While multinational employment dipped by 0.3% last year, the first annual decline since 2009, IBM’s latest announcement signals a positive trend for the country’s technology sector and its ability to attract and retain top talent in the field of AI.
