EE launches free contract to support parental screen rules

    • EE launches a free customisable “P.H.O.N.E. Contract” to help parents and children set clear smartphone rules together.
    • New “Safer SIM” plans and in-store safety sessions support healthy device use and improve digital literacy for young users.

What happened: EE introduces family smartphone contract and safety plans

EE has introduced a free, customisable “P.H.O.N.E. Contract” to help families navigate smartphone use ahead of the new school year. This downloadable agreement—backed by insights from the EE Youth Council, parent ambassador Konnie Huq, and Internet Matters—lets parents and children agree on screen-time limits, curfews, and device rules such as phone-free zones and responsible usage.

The launch also coincides with EE’s new under-18 “Safer SIM” plans (starting at £7/month) and in-store online safety sessions led by trained EE Guides, designed to help families put practical boundaries in place and avoid common conflicts like late-night use and distraction from schoolwork.

    Why it’s important

EE’s initiative addresses a widespread source of family tension: smartphone use. Their research shows over 90% of parents argue with their children about screen time, with top conflicts including content exposure, school distraction, and device use at night advanced-television.com. By offering a structured, collaborative agreement, EE encourages open communication and co-creation of device rules. This practice goes beyond simple tech fixes—it fosters digital literacy and mutual understanding, empowering young users and easing parental anxiety.

Aligned with broader efforts to make tech safer and more inclusive, EE’s approach echoes trends across the industry. Operators and regulators are increasingly focusing on user education and shared responsibility, not just content filtering. For families navigating the digital era, having tools like the P.H.O.N.E Contract and in-store guidance provides clarity and peace of mind. As more parents prepare to hand over smartphones to younger children, EE’s program may become a model for how tech companies support healthy device use habits and stronger family dynamics.
