  • Timing would mean that the new iPhones are expected to arrive in stores on 20th September.
  • The company is also intensifying testing of Mac models featuring M4 processors.

OUR TAKE
Apple’s efforts to invigorate its product lineup with these updates are crucial in a competitive market. The company’s ability to generate interest and sales with these updates could be a key factor in its financial performance over the next year.Transitioning to M4 processors represents a significant shift, potentially improving performance and efficiency for future Macs. This move might help Apple stay competitive in the broader tech market.

What happened

Apple Inc. is set to hold its largest product launch event of the year on 10th September, according to sources familiar with the matter. During the event, the company is expected to reveal the latest iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods. Although the official announcement has not been made, preparations are underway for the event, which falls on a Tuesday. Following the unveiling, the new products are anticipated to go on sale on 20th September, consistent with Apple’s recent practice.

The launch is pivotal for Apple, which has experienced sluggish sales of its smartphones and wearables in recent quarters. A 20th September release for the new iPhone 16 would ensure that some of the device’s revenue is accounted for in the current fiscal fourth quarter. Apple is anticipating a 5% growth in sales compared to the previous year during this period.

A bigger chunk of sales will come the following quarter, which coincides with the holiday season. Analysts have predicted that revenue will climb 7% to $128.4 billion in that period.

Why it’s important

The iPhone 16 will feature larger screens on its Pro models and introduce new camera enhancements, including a dedicated button for taking photos. Additionally, Apple is launching a suite of artificial intelligence tools under the name Apple Intelligence. However, overall, the new phones are expected to be only incrementally different from last year’s models.

Apple’s wearable devices are set to see more significant updates. The Apple Watch Series 10 will be thinner while featuring larger screens. Additionally, Apple is refreshing its AirPods lineup with new low-end and mid-tier models. Notably, the mid-tier AirPods will include noise cancellation for the first time, and the entry-level model will receive its first update since 2019.

The company also plans to start transitioning its Macs to M4 processors later this year. However, updates to the Mac line usually debut about a month after the annual iPhone launch.
