Amazon launches online shopping services in South Africa

  • Amazon announced the launch of Amazon.co.za, providing customers in South Africa with a new online shopping experience.
  • Customers in South Africa will be able to shop from a selection of local and international brands across 20 different product categories.
  • Online shopping in South Africa has increased dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many retailers have invested more in response.

In a bid to challenge the dominance of leading online retailer Takealot.com, Amazon has officially launched its online shopping service in South Africa.

According to Amazon officials, it will offer same-day delivery and next-day delivery with more than 3,000 pickup points.   

Customers can now discover and purchase selected local and international brands in 20 different product categories at discounted prices with same-day and next-day delivery.

For products delivered by Amazon, customers will receive free shipping on their first order, followed by subsequent orders over 500 rand (US$27).

Customers will also receive status updates via WhatsApp so they can track their orders every step of the way.

“We are excited to launch Amazon.co.za, along with thousands of independent sellers in South Africa. We provide customers with great value, broad selection—including international and local products—and a convenient delivery experience,” said Robert Koen, managing director of Sub-Saharan Africa, Amazon.

Investment in South Africa

As mentioned by Koen, “Building a strong relationship with South African brands and businesses is incredibly important to us. We want Amazon.co.za to be the place where they can reach millions of customers.”

Online shopping in South Africa has increased dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many international fast-fashion e-commerce retailers Shein and Temu, whose rapid growth has been fuelled by strong demand for their low-priced clothing.
