  • Google formed the ‘Platforms and Devices’ department, merging Android and Pixel under Rick Osterloh’s leadership.
  • Osterloh emphasises integrating hardware, software, and AI teams for groundbreaking user experiences.
  • The restructuring underscores Google’s AI-centric approach, focusing on seamless integration and centralised operations for future AI advancements.

Google recently restructured its software and hardware teams, establishing the new “Platforms and Devices” department, integrating Android system and Pixel hardware, led by executive Rick Osterloh to enhance the AI experience for users.

Osterloh, previously responsible for Google’s hardware division overseeing products like Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest, stated in an interview with The Verge, “I believe that only by integrating hardware, software, and AI teams tightly together can we truly deliver disruptive AI experiences to users. This is crucial for Google’s future development, and in hindsight, this restructuring will be seen as a very correct decision.”

Google commits to prioritise AI development

This strategic shift reflects Google’s commitment to prioritising AI development and achieving seamless integration in its hardware and software products. The merged team will primarily focus on expediting the delivery of next-generation AI experiences.

Google is currently restructuring its financial organisation, including Google Finance, Business Services, and Revenue Cash Business departments, and will establish more centralised operating centres in Bangalore, Mexico City, Dublin, Chicago, and Atlanta, betting on the development of the AI field.
