    • Diablo Canyon uses AI to manage licensing and infrastructure.
    • The plant’s operations are essential for California’s carbon goals.
    • AI tools were developed with support from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

    ___________

    What happened

California’s Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, the state’s only remaining nuclear facility, is using AI to meet new licensing requirements and manage aging infrastructure. Originally set to close, the plant will now stay open for at least 20 more years, following a 2022 decision by California officials to keep it running for carbon-reduction goals. Atomic Canyon, a startup, has partnered with PG&E to install its AI system, Neutron Enterprise, which will process and make millions of documents searchable. Trey Lauderdale, Atomic Canyon’s founder, said AI will simplify document retrieval and maintenance scheduling. PG&E’s Maureen Zawalick added that the system could boost efficiency by reducing labor-intensive tasks.

    Why it is important

It shows how AI is transforming critical infrastructure like nuclear plants. Diablo Canyon, California’s last operational nuclear plant, is crucial for the state’s carbon-reduction goals as it shifts from fossil fuels. By using AI to process documents and improve maintenance, the plant is addressing the challenges of aging infrastructure. This reflects a broader trend of AI improving efficiency and compliance across industries. In energy, AI is key for managing systems from power plants to renewables. Extending Diablo Canyon’s operation with AI is part of the debate on nuclear energy’s role in a sustainable future. For readers, this highlights AI’s importance in both environmental and industrial progress, shaping the future of energy.
