  • Samsung introduces new products with strengthened features and AI functions, enhancing its role in the tech industry.
  • Samsung’s launch, while showcasing the advancement of its technology, has also raised concerns about its sustainability, given the ongoing employee strike.

OUR TAKE
Even though nearly 7,000 employees are on strike, Samsung is still rolling out new products. The fact that Samsung seems to focus only on its business while ignoring the sincere demands of its employees, who are a key factor in the company’s sustainable development, may raise questions about whether the public and investors can trust Samsung.

What happened

With the ongoing staff strike, Samsung Electronics revealed its latest foldable smartphones on Wednesday, positioning its flagship models as lighter and slimmer with enhanced AI functions, directly challenging Apple’s dominance in the premium market. Alongside the phones, Samsung introduced advanced health monitoring features in its new smartwatch and a cutting-edge health monitoring ring.

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker first rolled out the foldable segment in 2019. The performance seems not optimistic as its share in the foldable phone market plummeted from 81% in 2022 to 63% in 2023. To counter this, Samsung’s new products boast a longer battery life, higher resolution camera, and improved cooling. They also enhanced AI features including a “listening mode” for simultaneous interpretation when paired with Galaxy Buds and AI search functions developed with Google.

Health monitoring advancements are a significant focus, with the Galaxy Watch products featuring new sensors and a 3-nanometre chip, tripling application processing efficiency. The introduction of the Galaxy Ring, priced at $399, marks Samsung’s most ambitious health accessory which continuously monitors heart rate and stress levels.

Why it’s important

Jack Leathem, a researcher at Canalys, said, “Bringing AI-powered health and fitness features to wearables will be important to differentiate” Samsung from other smartwatch vendors, and is “core to attracting brand switchers in the premium segment.”

Obviously, Samsung’s innovation in its products highlights the strong momentum in the tech industry. Combining its advanced chip and AI technology, these innovations aim to consolidate Samsung’s leading role in the smartphone market and even in the tech industry.

However, this launch comes amid a fierce employee strike at Samsung, highlighting tensions within the company. The strike, centred around demands for better wages and working conditions, underscores the broader challenges Samsung faces. The success of these new products could be critical in maintaining market leadership, but it may raise concerns for the company’s sustainability as well.
