Google is making commutes smoother in India by enabling metro ticket bookings via its Maps app. The tech giant has joined forces with India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to introduce this booking feature across major metro cities.
The collaboration also includes other initiatives, including an accelerator program for sellers, open-sourcing ONDC infrastructure, generous grants for eligible organizations, and more.
Toeing the line vs. Whatsapp
Google has been on a steady trend of building partnerships across the board. The tech company has been starting initiatives with the government, financial institutions, startups, public health infrastructure, and law enforcement.

The newly launched feature’s goal is to provide a seamless and comprehensive experience for commuters. Interestingly, this move puts Google in direct competition with WhatsApp, which recently introduced its own metro ticket booking system in Bengaluru and Delhi.
While WhatsApp integrates end-to-end payment support through city metro train corporations, Google aims to make the process even more seamless by incorporating buyer apps within the ONDC network.
Just another addition to a line of initiatives
In addition to the metro ticket booking feature, Google has also launched a range of new lending options for Google Pay users and merchants. The new features roll out alongside big updates to its generative AI capabilities.
