    • Eleven telecom projects share £13 million to bridge the digital divide
    • Funding supports rural 5G, emergency services and satellite connectivity

What happened: Eleven UK telecom projects receive shared funding boost for advanced connectivity

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has awarded a total of £13 million in government grants to support eleven telecom initiatives. Each project will receive around £1.2 million to advance technologies that address the digital divide across the UK. The funding will enhance 5G access in rural locations using cost-effective solutions. It will also drive innovation in commercialising next-generation technologies that may contribute to 6G networks.

One initiative will improve connectivity for emergency services, boosting disaster response and coordination. Another, named CAPTIVATE2, focuses on enhancing optical satellite communication for faster data transfer from ground to space. These projects align with the UK government’s industrial strategy, emphasising home-grown innovation. UKRI leadership highlighted the investment as a key milestone in delivering world-class advanced connectivity across the nation.

    Why it’s important

This funding package supports the commercial roll-out of telecom innovation across the UK. Enhanced rural 5G access helps close connectivity gaps for underserved communities. Emergency services stand to benefit from faster response times and improved coordination in crises. Satellite and optical innovations may lay the groundwork for ultra-fast, reliable communication networks in future 6G systems.

UK-based R&D projects reinforce domestic telecom resilience and job creation. The emphasis on “home-grown” expertise strengthens long-term leadership in telecom modernization. By catalyzing multi-sector collaborations, the funding may accelerate market adoption of advanced connectivity tools. It ensures the UK maintains momentum in digital infrastructure development for the decade ahead.
