Trump set to unveil AI guidelines with energy focus

    • Expected policy loosens AI rules and boosts energy for data centres
    • Includes executive orders, federal legislation and grid expansion

What happened: Administration prepares AI action plan with energy provisions

According to Bloomberg, President Trump will soon announce an AI Action Plan that outlines looser guidelines for AI development. The plan includes executive orders to ease federal restrictions. It also urges Congress to introduce legislation that overrides state AI rules. The policy shifts aim to promote faster AI rollout and encourage private sector investment.

The framework will pair support for new data centre energy sources with the previous executive order from January 2025. This combines AI advancement, deregulation, and energy production into a unified national strategy. Bloomberg also notes the plan will encourage global AI cooperation and strengthen energy supplies to meet rising demands.

    Why it’s important

The move underscores the administration’s push for US dominance in AI. By easing regulation and expanding energy access for data centres, it seeks to reduce policy bottlenecks. This could spur growth in AI services, industrial automation, and tech infrastructure. Linking AI with energy reflects how compute-intensive AI systems now rely heavily on reliable power sources.

The federal signal to Congress shows an intent to create a uniform national framework. This may prevent inconsistent AI regulation across states. Global coordination may improve US ties in international AI projects. However, the impact will depend on how quickly new laws pass and how effectively the grid is scaled.
