    • Samsung and KT collaborate to improve 6G signal quality through advanced technologies.
    • The partnership focuses on multi-antenna systems and AI integration to enhance network performance.

What happened: Strategic partnership for 6G advancement

South Korean technology giants Samsung and KT have announced a strategic partnership aimed at addressing the significant challenges associated with 6G signal quality. The collaboration will pool the companies’ expertise in telecommunications and research to advance key technologies necessary for the next generation of mobile networks.

The primary focus of the partnership is the development of multi-antenna technologies, specifically eXtreme multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO). This ultra-high-density antenna technology is designed to enhance 6G coverage and increase data transmission speeds. The collaboration will also explore the integration of AI within telecoms systems to bolster network stability and overall performance.

This alliance comes amid ongoing global discussions and standardisation efforts surrounding the future of mobile communication. A key area of initial research for Samsung and KT will be the 7 GHz band (7.125–8.4 GHz), which was identified as a candidate frequency at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC-23). This band is viewed as particularly attractive due to its favourable frequency characteristics and the availability of spectrum.

    Why it is important

The partnership between Samsung and KT represents a significant step in the global race to develop and deploy 6G networks. The collaboration addresses key challenges such as signal path loss in higher frequency bands and explores the intelligent integration of AI to enhance user experience. This research is crucial as it aims to ensure that 6G networks deliver faster, more reliable, and more pervasive mobile connectivity compared to existing 5G services.

By focusing on advanced technologies like X-MIMO and AI, Samsung and KT are contributing to the foundational development of next-generation communication systems, which will have a profound impact on future mobile communication innovations.
