What happened: Google unveils Pixel 10 series with AI tools like Visual Overlays
Google announced the Pixel 10 series at its Made by Google event on 20 August 2025. The new phones—Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL—arrived ahead of Apple’s iPhone 17 launch and push Apple to hurry on AI-powered phones.
The devices are powered by the new custom Tensor G5 chip, designed to run the latest Gemini Nano AI model efficiently. Google unveiled many AI features:
- Visual Overlays, letting Gemini Live “see” through the camera and highlight useful info, such as parking signs while travelling.
- Magic Cue, a system-wide proactive AI that suggests actions in real time across Gmail, Calendar, Messages, Screenshots and more.
- Camera Coach, guiding users to capture better shots with real-time advice .
- Voice features like Voice Translate for calls, Take a Message, and Gemini Live tone detection, which adjusts responses by sensing user emotion .
- Pixel Journal, an AI-prompted journalling app to track goals, add photos and offer insights—Google’s answer to Apple’s Journal .Further small AI upgrades include Gboard writing tools, Pixel Studio enhancements for screenshots, and Notebook LM integration in Recorder and screenshots .
Beyond AI, phone hardware got upgrades: the regular Pixel 10 now includes a telephoto lens previously exclusive to Pro models; Pro versions offer improved camera/video, bigger batteries and faster charging. Magnetic Pixelsnap accessories like a $40 Qi2 charger, $50 ring-case and $30 ring stand were introduced. A Pixel 10 Pro Fold was also launched in US dollars at $1,799—with IP68 water/dust resistance, stronger hinge, larger displays and improved battery and camera specs. Notably, Pixel 10 devices are now launching in Mexico for the first time.
