Comcast launches World Cup-focused soccer package

    • The $85-a-month package bundles 60 channels and Peacock Premium, offering over 1,500 matches.
    • It reflects the growing trend of using live sports to retain subscribers amid cord-cutting pressures.

What happened: New offering ahead of World Cup

Comcast has launched a dedicated “World Soccer Ticket” for Xfinity subscribers, offering access to more than 1,500 matches—from the Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Liga MX, CONCACAF competitions, to all 2026 FIFA World Cup games. The package is priced at US$85 per month, includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable and sports channels, plus Peacock Premium. English and Spanish commentary are available via networks like Fox, Telemundo, Universo and Peacock. Viewers can tune in through the X1 set-top box or the Xfinity Stream app.

    Why it’s important

Live sports have become a cornerstone of subscriber retention in an era when audiences are shifting away from traditional cable. By consolidating marquee football tournaments into one subscription, Comcast is betting that sports fans will pay a premium for convenience and comprehensive coverage. The move also supports its streaming platform Peacock, which has been investing heavily in exclusive sports content to compete with rivals such as ESPN+, Paramount+ and DAZN.

However, there is a broader industry question about sustainability. The high cost of sports rights is pushing subscription prices upward, which may deter casual viewers and limit audience growth. At US$85 per month, the “World Soccer Ticket” sits at the top end of the market, which could challenge its adoption beyond the core football fanbase. As streaming services continue to fragment sports coverage, some analysts suggest that customers may prefer more flexible, event-based purchase options rather than committing to expensive long-term bundles. Comcast’s success will depend on whether it can maintain subscriber interest once the 2026 World Cup concludes, and how it adapts to an increasingly competitive and price-sensitive market.
