What happened
Broadcom has appointed Amie Thuener, Alphabet’s vice president, corporate controller and chief accounting officer, as its next chief financial officer, effective June 12, 2026. She will succeed Kirsten Spears, who has served as CFO since late 2020 and will remain as an adviser for nine months after stepping down to ensure continuity.
Thuener brings experience from Alphabet, where she has held senior finance roles since 2018, and previously worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The leadership change comes after a period of significant expansion at Broadcom, including its $69 billion acquisition of VMware in 2023, one of the largest deals in the sector. The company, valued at roughly $1.48 trillion, is also scaling its AI-related business and recently projected that AI chip revenue could exceed $100 billion next year amid strong demand.

Why it’s important
The appointment reflects how financial leadership is becoming central to strategy as tech firms manage complex growth cycles spanning AI, acquisitions and infrastructure. CFOs are no longer just stewards of accounts but key decision-makers shaping investment priorities and execution.
It also underscores accelerating executive mobility across the sector. As capital intensity rises in semiconductors and data centres, companies are increasingly competing for finance leaders with experience in global operations and large-scale transactions, turning CFO hiring into a strategic battleground.
