  • Wataniya Telecom Algérie (Nedjma/Ooredoo) launched in 2004 with a third GSM licence and $490 million financing to build nationwide coverage.
  • The operator supports over 4.5 million mobile subscribers and manages its own ASN and IPv4 blocks, strengthening Algeria’s telecom ecosystem.

Expanding GSM services since 2004

Wataniya Telecom Algérie, operating under the Nedjma and now Ooredoo brand, joined Algeria’s telecom market after being awarded the country’s third GSM licence in December 2003 for US $421 million. It commenced commercial operations on 25 August 2004 and secured approximately US $490 million in medium-term financing in 2005 to expand its GSM network nationwide .

Today, it serves over 4.5 million mobile subscribers . The company manages its own IP infrastructure with AFRINIC‑assigned ASN 33779 and several IPv4 address ranges, enhancing its ability to support data services across Algeria.

Driving competition and digital growth in Algeria’s telecom sector

Wataniya Telecom Algérie represents a pivotal shift in Algeria’s telecommunications landscape. As a key player alongside Algérie Télécom and Orascom, its entry as the third GSM operator fostered competition, helping deliver better services and pricing to consumers. With over 4.5 million subscribers, the operator plays a vital role in broadening mobile connectivity and boosting digital inclusion.

Control over its own ASN and IPv4 space demonstrates Wataniya’s investment in data-driven services and future expansion into broadband and IoT offerings. Meanwhile, the sizeable US $490 million investment—supported by Citigroup and international lenders—highlighted confidence in Algeria’s telecom potential and established a blueprint for large-scale infrastructure financing.
