Vonage launches fraud prevention network APIs

  • Vonage’s new APIs help businesses leverage carrier-verified trust signals for fraud prevention, enhancing digital transformation.
  • With identity-related fraud on the rise, the APIs promise faster authentication and better detection of SIM swap attacks.

What happened: Vonage launches fraud prevention APIs

Vonage, the telecom giant owned by Ericsson, has launched two new fraud prevention network APIs aimed at enhancing the security of digital transactions. The two products—Vonage Silent Authentication and Vonage SIM Swap detection—are designed to help developers incorporate advanced fraud detection capabilities into their applications.

The Silent Authentication API allows businesses to validate users’ phone numbers without the need for traditional SMS-based one-time passcodes (OTPs). This approach, Vonage claims, is faster and less vulnerable to security risks such as social engineering and interception. Early implementations of the Silent Authentication API have shown a three to five times faster authentication rate and up to an 8% higher conversion rate compared to SMS OTPs.

On the other hand, the SIM Swap detection API helps identify when a user’s SIM card is swapped, a common tactic used in account takeovers. With SIM swap fraud reportedly surging by more than 1,000%, this API promises to increase fraud detection by 30-40%, offering early warning signals to businesses.

Vonage’s APIs are available to developers across major US carriers, providing access to real-time network intelligence to prevent fraud and streamline identity verification processes. The APIs have already been adopted by companies like Freenow and Persona, signalling strong early interest in the technology.

Why it’s important

The launch of Vonage’s new fraud prevention tools comes as identity-related fraud continues to grow, with 84% of US businesses reportedly affected. With fraudsters becoming increasingly sophisticated, businesses are under mounting pressure to protect their customers while ensuring frictionless digital experiences. Vonage’s APIs aim to tackle this challenge by providing businesses with the tools to detect fraud faster and more effectively.

Christophe Van de Weyer, President of Vonage’s API Business Unit, noted that these APIs are setting a new standard in the industry. By leveraging carrier-verified data and real-time network intelligence, Vonage is providing a solution that not only addresses fraud but also enhances the overall customer experience.

Courtney Munroe, Research Vice President at IDC, praised Vonage for its innovation, emphasising the significance of these APIs in tackling the growing fraud landscape and setting new standards for secure digital interactions.
